Beneath the Waves has lots of resources to learn more about Whakaari / White Island and Tūhua / Mayor Island, Aotearoa New Zealand’s nearshore volcanic islands.

Check them out below:

Tūhua / Mayor Island info sheet(external link) Tūhua/Mayor Island is a dormant volcano, meaning it is not currently active or restless, but could erupt again. This fact sheet provides details on the geologic significance and relevant hazards around the island.

ESRI StoryMap: "Getting to know our nearshore volcanoes"(external link) The StoryMap is an interactive digital resource that lets users explore the Bay of Plenty's nearshore volcanoes above and below water.

Bay of Plenty virtual field trip(external link)  This online resource is a virtual field trip around locations of geologic importance in the Bay of Plenty. This resource consists of a series of videos where experts share insights on how, science, technology, and past experiences are helping communities become more resilient in the face of emergencies.

5 Minute Volcano board game(external link) This physical game can be printed and is an excellent resource that enables learners to identify risks faced by communities that live near volcanoes and how they can manage the hazards this may pose.

Tsunami in the sandpit activity(external link) In this demonstration, students use a balloon in a container of sand and water to model how volcanic eruptions can generate a tsunami.

Electronic games

Magma Drillers(external link)  Magma Drillers Save Planet Earth is an activity that uses a team approach to finding environmentally friendly sources of geothermal energy. Students take on the roles of scientists and engineers to learn specialist knowledge and then work collaboratively within teams to find friendly sources of geothermal energy.

Magma Pop(external link) Is an interactive game that that enables users to visualise how minerals crystallise as a magma chamber cools. Magma Pop is an effective way to visually represent a hot magma chamber and the process of fractional crystallisation.

Volcanic Explorer(external link) Volcanic Explorer NZ, or VENZ, is a digital game designed for volcanic education, combining science communication and educational game design.  VENZ consists of 6 micro games that can be played in 5-10 minutes.
